My favorite video game.2010-06-075 / 5
Metroid is my favorite video game, and I think that it's one of the best for the NES. I suppose that it may not look so great when compared to the newer games in the series, but for its time, it was amazing. Anybody who claims to be a real fan of classic Nintendo games should play this. if you need help, here's my walkthrough:

Solid sci-fi Nintendo action game2009-12-225 / 5
Metroid is a Nintendo game designed as a sci-fi adventure but in all actuality it's more of an action game. In adventure games you usually talk to people and collect items, so the label of this as an "adventure game" is sort of a misrepresentation. You go through six different areas: Tourian, Norfair, Brinstar, Ridley's Hideout, Kraid's Hideout, and Mother Brain's hideout. Most of the areas contain missile tanks and weapon upgrades. There is an abundance of missile tanks and weapon upgrades but the great thing about the game is that you don't have to get them all in order to beat the game. As a matter-of-fact, about a third of the missile tanks and weapon upgrades should be avoided in order to beat the game faster. Each weapon has their pros and cons. The Laser weapon is effective but very time-consuming to get since you have to get a missile tank and go all the way up Tourian area just to get it. The Wave Beam is powerful but the zig-zaggy motion of the weapon is frustrating since it can go underneath an enemy and not hit. The Ice Beam can freeze an enemy but takes more hits to take out an enemy. Still, this is the weapon you will need throughout the majority of the game and for the Mother Brain (final) area because it's the only effective weapon against the metroids in the area. The two best ways to beat Metroid is to either beat it in one day or complete an area, take down the password, and complete the next area some other time. The game takes about two to three hours to beat with the use of a map and notes. Truth be told, without the map of the six areas and knowing where the missile tanks and upgrades are, this game can be beyond frustrating. However, with the help of a map and a little useful note-taking (what to get and in what order), this game is fun and has replay value.

Taking you to school on game design....2009-08-175 / 5
If you have any idea about programming, then you will recognize that Metroid is a perfect example of excellent programming.

A simply awesome retro classic now, this game still deserves and demands your respect and honor.

The sequels are equally as awesome... now we are graced with a 3pack of Metroid Prime games on the Nintendo Wii.

I recommend all Metroid games, so get into the series today...

also, get the Metal soundtrack for the orig game by the band STEMAGE... good stuff!! 5 stars for that soundtrack!!!

Samus is a chick........cool!!!2008-09-295 / 5
This game was hard, but yet fun! The music score was soothing, adventurous, and enjoyable to go with the game. Graphics were colorful and well advanced for 1986! Like Kid Icarus, it does'nt fool around for one minute. Wasting rockets, falling into the lava, having to use your smart bombs to elevate to the higher ground to proceed, and falling back while the enemies hit you from all angles are NO JOKE!! You gotta know what you're doing or else "game over." I only beat the first boss after so many tries so I really suck. The passwords are just as hard as playing the game itself (this was when passwords were a new thing in video games) so make sure you jot them down correctly or get yourself an emulator. Game Genie will give you a better boost, but you gotta use your best judgement on where to go because unless you have the first issue of Nintendo Power or the internet (not available in the 1980's), you are lost! I know game genie is cheating, but I don't care as long as I get the satisfaction of completing the game while I get a lasting enjoyment of shooting enemies with my infinite rockets. I did'nt complete the game yet, but yes, Samus is a chick...cool!!! Now thats equal opportunity gaming. That also proves that it did'nt start with Princess in Super Mario 2 of which came out 2 years later.

I gotta go and finish the game so I strongly recommend this game for the NES or spend some Wi points on it if you don't have the NES! Its hard, but its worth your money. Same thing with Kid Icarus!!
brilliant 20 years ago, brilliant now, and probably brilliant forever2008-06-285 / 5
I don't understand why some people have a problem with the original Metroid. There's really only ONE minor flaw- on more than one occasion, you'll find yourself inside a room that appears to be exactly the same as a room you've been to before, but with very minor changes separating the two, such as enemies in one room, and nothing in the other room. That's it. Some occasional *minor* confusion understanding the difference between a few of the rooms.

That's the only problem with the game. Even then, the game is pretty small so you shouldn't have THAT much of a hard time with it. You shouldn't be spending THAT much time confused and scratching your head where to go and what to do.

There's nothing else to complain about. The original NES Metroid *is* a classic. The excellent theme music in EVERY SINGLE AREA OF THE GAME, the constant arcade-style shooting action (and need I remind you that NO other Metroid game gives you *this* much shooting action) the creepy atmosphere of being stuck inside a dark planet with enemies that seem to crawl, fly, or zig zag all OVER the place, constantly. It's a lot of fun shooting or avoiding these enemies, and the game is so much fun words can't even describe how GREAT the experience is. Replay value indeed.

I was a child in the 80's and remember playing this game over and over as I found new areas and felt the excitement when I finally figured out what I was supposed to do. Remember the first time we reached that part near the beginning where we had to work our way UP that lengthy blue-colored area with spikey creatures crawling around and rippers flying back and forth? Remember when we said to ourselves "Man, is this thing ever going to END or am I supposed to keep climbing forever?" And remember when we finally found a door after all that climbing and breathed a sigh of relief? Didn't you realize this game was something much different from the other NES games at the time? THAT'S what makes a game a classic.

There was nothing else like this game back in the day. A space shooter that was ALSO an action game with fantastic gameplay, and even a platformer for that matter. The game requires lots of climbing and exploring. The music in the more maze-like areas fit *extremely* well with the confusion of trying to find your way out of each area. Absolutely a great game.

Sure, it's short by todays standards, but the two hours it takes for me to blow through the game is time well spent. The password system was also really cool because you had to write down extremely long passwords. This is a good thing because there's a mysterious feeling to the dead quiet sound of a password appearing on screen after you were killed.

People who dismiss this game are spoiled by either Super Metroid's superior graphics and gameplay, or even worse, spoiled by the drastically different Metroid Prime games. Remember, I was AROUND in the 80's and got to experience this classic game when it was brand new. That's why I can appreciate it for the masterpiece it is. Atmosphere, gameplay, music, memories, that dreaded feeling of hopelessness and fear when you believed you were stuck in certain areas, you name it. This game has it all, baby.

Don't be afraid of a challenge (though I've never believed the game was as difficult as most people) and don't be afraid of a game that's old. EVERYTHING will be old one day.
