Dead Space Extraction Wii
Dead Space Extraction is a prequel to 2008's critically acclaimed third-person action horror game for Next-Gen and PC platforms, Dead Space. A Wii exclusive, Extraction ups the action through an exciting mix of intuitive controls, co-op gameplay, puzzle-solving and branching pathways. Together with the addition of new enemies, characters, weapons and environments, Dead Space Extraction sets a new standard for action horror on the Wii that is sure to please both those new to the Dead Space game universe, and those anxious for more. New FPS perspective. View larger. | New characters, weapons... View larger. | Two-player co-op and arcade style challenge mode play options. View larger. | Story Dead Space Extraction tells the untold story of the Aegis VII Colony through a handful of survivors battling to reach the orbiting USG Ishimura amidst a horrific infection and the initial invasion by a violent alien race known as Necromorphs. As these survivors' allies mysteriously fall victim to dementia, it becomes clear that protecting a young girl granting them a bizarre immunity may be their only hope for survival in a struggle that could have implications for all of humanity. Gameplay Although designed to preserve the feel of the action of the original game, gameplay in Extraction is also quite unique. First, the player perspective has been changed from third, to first-person, placing all the action right in front of you. Also, Extraction is a 'rail shooter,' meaning a shooter game where most of the action engaged in and paths followed are programmed into the mission play, instead of the freeform wandering ability built into the considerably larger Next-Gen and PC Dead Space release. The combination of these two changes funnels the players focus onto the combat options available in the game. In dealing with the danger of the alien Necromorphs swarming the game space, Dead Space Extraction utilizes the precision of the Wii Remote in variety of ways. Weapons like the Plasma Cutter can dispatch these enemies from a distance by taking advantage of the remote's pointing targeting ability, while a quick wave can activate weapons like the Ripper, a guidable spinning saw blade. The Wii Remote is also handy for picking up items and hurling them at enemies using the power of Kinesis. Other gameplay changes include new play modes. The most notable of these is the inclusion of a two player co-op play option. This allows an additional player to drop in or out of the action as he/she chooses. The game rebalances the opposition in these cases to make sure that the gameplay doesn't become too easy. In addition, Extraction also features a Challenge mode in which after certain sections of the game are cleared, areas within those sections are unlocked for bonus arcade style action where players build up points linked to how many Necromorphs are destroyed. Taken together all these changes add up to more action, more fun and more Dead Space for players on the Wii. Key Game Features - An All-New Prequel Exclusively for the Wii

| Dead Space Extraction | 2010-07-16 | 4 / 5 |
| | If you like shooters games, and love blood, this is your game, very adictive, very fun, you will scream, play with the wii zapper rulez |
| Doesn't keep player's interest. | 2010-07-02 | 1 / 5 |
| | I'm not going to comment on the visual effects or environments because that's not what makes a game good. What makes a game a good game is how much fun you have playing it. In my opinion, this game has too many cinematic sequences that interrupt and delay your game play. Most of the time, it seemed that these cinematic segments outnumber and outlast the segments of actual playing. Additionally, since your characters are lead along a rail, there is very little room for exploration, despite the cool environments. If you use a Wii zapper, the controls also make it difficult to play since the 'A' button is needed to perform tasks. Using a Nyko Perfect Shot gun makes matters worse because a nunchuk in one hand and the gun in the other leaves no free hand to press the 'A' button. After just a short while of playing this game with a friend, we both were bored by time we reached the third level. |
| Experimental Fan Service | 2010-06-19 | 3 / 5 |
| | Some of the best visuals available on the Wii system. While I can appreciate what Viceral Games was trying to do with this, it came off as nothing more than fan service and really does feel out of place on the Wii. The limited edition of the PS3 version of Dead Space 2 will include this game for the Move. If you are interested in Dead Space from a story perspective, this is for you, but don't expect ground breaking gameplay. |
| Really enjoyable | 2010-06-01 | 5 / 5 |
| | Bought this game for my wife. I ended up playing two player co-op with her. We played it for hours and laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and playability of this game. I would recommend to anyone looking for an on the rails shooter with in depth story and replayability. |
| Fantastic, and very cinematic | 2010-05-28 | 4 / 5 |
| This game deserves so much more attention than it's gotten, being written off by many as a stupid on-rails shooter. It is SO much more. It is just like experiencing a movie firsthand, and it's the most authentic and genuinely scary sci-fi horror experience of its kind since James Cameron made "Aliens," for my money. The story is absolutely engaging, something I typically couldn't care less about in video games, but here just grabs me and sucks me in. The concept is wholly original, for a genre long since left devoid of many creative ideas. The idea of the alien Necromorphs is psychologically scarring on every level, and watching their bloody takeover of an entire colony in the opening chapters of this game is like watching it from a real, personal perspective; it will leave you rattled, and yet desperate to play more to see where the story is going. Very intense, very interesting, and easily the most cinematic game I have ever played, with a fully fleshed-out musical score that would be right at home in a feature film. It also pushes the graphics of the Wii to its limits; it's easily one of the most beautifully detailed and engrossing games you will find for this console.
For those who prefer the hardcore, survival horror experience of the original PS3/Xbox game, you're wrong to dismiss this as a bare-bones, empty-headed title. It is authentic Dead Space through and through, and it will leave you begging for more when you're done. This game needs a LOT more support, because I know it hasn't exactly lit the sales charts on fire or encouraged EA to develop more titles in this series for the Wii.
For all my wild praise of this amazing game, I deduct 1 star from my overall score for reasons of sheer repetition; there is VERY little enemy variety even after playing four or five chapters into the game, and that's a disappointment; after dismembering hundreds of the same spiky-armed creature, they definitely begin to lose the fear factor that they initially inspire. I had read all about the many different kinds of Necromorphs that made it into the PS3 and Xbox original, and it's disappointing to not encounter most of them here. But all told, when compared against the overall quality of the package to be found here, it's a relatively small gripe and should not hold anyone back from experiencing one of the most incredibly original and cinematic games they are likely to come across this console generation. |
