| | This game is alot of fun, It just gets a little reptitive. Don't plan on using the online. Last time I went online there were 2 people total online. This game easily takes 15+ hours. |

| Need for Speed took a very different direction with this particular installment. There were no police chases, no city streets, and the cover for all of this (that Ryan Cooper is trying to go legit) is rubbed in your face at every race day. Does that make this a terrible game? No! It is however called, "Pro-Street" which should indicate that it isn't about canyon battles, outrunning the police, or re: later in the series - going undercover.
The mechanics of the game are fine, so long as you set yourself on King and do not use the assists. This is probably one of the best games to play with a steering wheel and foot pedals as opposed to the controller which can be very trying later in the game. This is a more finesse game than the previous, and it can be incredibly frustrating at first when your stage one car responds exactly like one should. That doesn't take away from the game; it just pisses you off, which should be a motivating factor in a competitive game.
The story isn't really there, but let's face it these games were never huge on plot. They're mostly about fast cars, fast tracks, and hard turns. I loved many of the different events and I enjoyed trying to dominate and squeeze out that slightly higher score to break records on tracks. There were also entire events that I despised and couldn't wait to be through, that made me want to scream and tear out my hair or better yet throw my controller at the television.
In comparison to the other games in the series thus far and those that came after it, this isn't one of the best but it certainly isn't one of the worst. It's a "middle" game and shows that they were attempting to take a more family friendly approach, or possibly got some heat (judging by the disclaimer at the beginning of the game about not street racing) that they were trying to make up for. Still, it's a must have in the series.
Pro: Plays like a car should, they suck at stage one and they're ridiculous at stage three without proper tuning. Great game for a wheel (many games are painful if you use one ala Dirt). Wonderful party game that you can walk away from and check the grill without missing anything.
Con: Poor plot, huge step away from the actual progression of the series, handicaps do more harm than good for new players. |

| Everybody has already gone into details, so I will just summarize my thoughts.
I have tried a couple of the previous NFS versions. I don't like the "street racing" arena. I don't believe in street racing, as it is illegal and dangerous, especially to innocent bystanders. I think ERA did it right, by putting racing back on the track as it should be.
I really enjoy this game completely. It may not be ultra realistic, but no game is the same as really being in a car on a track. No game will give you that. This game (for me) is close. I know some of the cars seem to be sluggish and don't appear to run as they do in real life, but with tuning and tweaking, they do become much more realistic. The game is just as much about which mods and which tweaks as it is about racing. That's how real racing is. Actually real racing is 90% mods and tweaking and 10% driving skill.
I only use a game pad and I can control the car well and I can beat all the competition by using racing technique. Come into a turn properly and leave it properly and you gain seconds off the competition. The drag scene is realistic, especially the burnouts. I really love to burn out with a 67 Chevelle hopped up to stage 3.
Overall there's a bunch of tracks, flavors, events, cars and mods. It should keep me going for a long time. So many cars to try out and learn and so many mods to use. I am really satisfied with this game and with ERA's choice to do a "track only" game.
3 cheers for doing the right thing and not promoting more illegal street racing.
Oh, use the patch found on ERA's website. It's needed to have the game be smoother (for XP anyhow).

**EDIT** After playing this game for a month or so, I feel it's totally biased towards foreign cars. (Imagine that). Any time a Supra beats a Ford GT in Drag times, then it's absurdly biased. The American Muscle cars are there, but only to get US people to buy. If you use Foreign cars, they win hands down time after time. I mean in comparison - All stage 3 parts on one versus the other. That's just not right, but since nothing is made in the US any more, I guess it's life... |

| If I had rented this game first I would not have bought it. The feel of the game is not to the same high standard of NFS Underground 2, NFS Most Wanted and NFS Carbon and even the later NFS Shift. I think it's fun to drive around the city streets and all of that in the earlier games but the poor game play is why I'm rating this so LOW. Terrible feel and boring.
I was so disappointed when playing this game after being so excited to open it up as a Christmas present 2 years ago. I haven't even got it out to play it once since the first week I tried to play it. |
