The Sega Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is an essential purchase if you want to save games or take advantage of the various functions (namely mini-games) ed by some titles such as Sonic Adventure or TrickStyle. LCD screen is clear and s a crisp display Allows users to save data, play mini-games and display GAME-related information on a built-in LCD screen The Visual Memory Unit also features a directional pad on the bottom left and two main buttons (A and B) to the right for use with mini-games Contains 200 blocks of space to store data and requires two lithium batteries for operation (batteries are not required if the device is only used as a memory card, however) The peripheral can also link up with another VMU in order to transfer files or play mini-games simultaneously with another user

| This product was a great innovation from Dreamcast, never has there been or even now a visual memory unit. Its novelty will live in legacy especially in one made so elegantly. |

| The Visual Memory Unit is for Sega's Dreamcast game console and connected to the systems controller to interface with games. It was a truly innovative, but underutilized accessory by game developers who used it to simply save data, which it did wonderfully. The V.M.U was more than a glorified memory card; it was something that could easily enhance any game, if only a little extra time was invested into the overall product. Unfortunately only a modest handful Dreamcast titles took advantage the V.M.U, like Jet Grind Radio, Power Stone, Shenmue and Street Fighter Alpha 3 among others that added extra features or mini games. The Visual Memory Unit design resembles a miniaturized version of Nintendo's original Gameboy. The LCD screen is placed above the D-pad and other buttons, which are situated close together., but the whole unit fits nicely in the palm of your hand. Even though the 200 blocks of memory on the V.M.U is enough to store numerous average sized save files, it leaves very little room when saving games like Sega's classic 2K sports series that require more space. Perhaps because of the modest storage size, but files aren't prone to being corrupted, even after nearly a decade. Overall, the Visual Memory Unit is a necessity for any Dreamcast owner, but I'd highly recommend purchasing a spare as a backup (units can even interlock to exchange files). Beware though, the V.M.U drains batteries at an alarming rate, but time sure does fly when your having fun! |

I bought this mainly to use with Power stone 2, I don't play the games on the card itself, it allows you to save Power stone 2 costumes.
In the future, it may need a new battery, which you can buy from a store. |
| Interesting, Underused Idea, but in the end, it Saves Games. | 2007-10-27 | 4 / 5 |

| Just as the title of my review says: It was a cool and original, sort of innovative idea that went underrated and underused. But at the end of the day, all I needed was a gadget to save my Dreamcast game files, and it does that perfectly. |
