The storyline plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster -- lead character Marcus Fenix pits advanced human technology against the overwhelming Locust Horde. Built around a revolutionary third-person tactical combat system and breathtaking, high-definition visuals from the Unreal Engine 3, Gears of War immerses you in a horrifying tale of war and survival.

The gameplay is focused on a fire team co-op so advanced that your A.I. teammates are indiscernible from human players. Voice recognition and real-time lip synching heighten the absorbing experience. The Unreal Engine 3 technology brings out the smallest details in the largest of battles. With GOW you're sure to experience a rich, dynamic world where characters spring to life. Speaking of life, the battlefield is a lethal place. To survive, you must suppress your enemy with blindfire, take cover in interactive environments, and use weapons and teammates to outwit your dreaded, inhuman foes. And with a title like GOW, it would be shame if you couldn't get online and challenge live gamers. With the next-generation of Xbox Live, you'll be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize games, and build personalized gamer profiles.

Gears of War shined bright at Microsoft's pre-E3 press briefing, but a deeper demo at Microsoft's E3 booth revealed many of the game's mechanics. GOW is built with both the hardcore and casual gamer in mind. But, instead of selecting a difficulty level at the start of the game, GOW offers a choice at the beginning of each level. In the vein of choose your own adventure, you can select between a difficult or easy path. And it's not just a simple choice of battling tougher enemies; each path (explained by a comrade) represents additional content that is crucial to the storyline. After easing your way into the experience of the gameplay with the simpler paths, you can go back and test your skills on the more difficult routes and never feel like you've played through the areas before.

Standing around in the open is likely to get you killed in GOW. You must use cover to survive. With a context sensitive A button function, you won't have to sweat memorizing cumbersome button combos. The A button will:

  • Slam you into cover. As you approach cover in GOW simply tap the A button to slide and make immediate use of cover.
  • Vault you over the cover. Once you're in cover, pressing up and A will vault you over your cover to engage the opponent or next cover opportunity.
  • Evade enemy fire. When you're forced to be out in the open, tapping the A button will engage a roll maneuver to evade enemy fire.
  • Activate a "Swat Turn." When taking cover on the side of a doorway, pressing the A button will spin your character from one side of the doorway to the other, helping avoid fire.
Ripping a magazine free and replacing it in the midst of bloody combat is no easy task. GOW simulates this difficult action by forcing you to perfect your reloading skills. To be effective in combat you'll need to allot for time to successfully reload your weapon. Do it well and the battle is yours; do it poorly and you may actually jam your gun. Time it perfectly and you'll earn a bonus with a temporary damage boost. Though GOW clearly showcases a sci-fi experience, its roots are in tactical, realistic combat scenarios. Therefore, running and gunning makes for seriously erratic shooting. Think about what you're doing. Unless wasting ammo is your goal, you better stop, aim, shoot, and then move on. Otherwise, the Locust Horde might swarm you and take your life.

Gears of War presents a focused and well-paced cinematic experience, and nothing ruins that faster than a time-consuming exploration of every switch or button to find the elusive trigger to open a door. This game introduces a "point of interest" button that comes up on the screen so you can immediately interact with the necessary item to move forward in your gameplay. GOW certainly offers drool-worthy graphics, but the mechanics have also received equal attention. Keep your eyes and ears on high alert for a release date, as Microsoft hasn't let the cat out of the bag on when gamers will be able to tackle this great-looking and great-playing title.

A Fanastic Tale of Brothers in Arms that Truly Turn the Gears of War2010-06-254 / 5
In a nutshell, gears of war is a great game. The story is very interesting and original and it's easy to follow if you pay attention during the game and in the cutscenes. The single player experience is fantastic. The weapons are diverse and unique, especially the Torque Bow. The bow is basically a metal bow and arrow thatn shoots explosive arrows that can stick to targets if they are charged long enough. The chainsaw is awesome, there is nothing more gratifying than seeing your enemy lying in pieces moments after you jacked him up with that chainsaw. The curbstomp move is also cool, but it's gears 2 that really delivers the superior execution display. The cover system is a great idea, and they made it work pretty well, but the huge flaw is that the A button that they use for cover is used for way too many other things as well. I always find myself with almost no health left about to die and a try to save myself by hiding behind a wall, but I roll by accident, since it also uses the A button which costs me my life and I end up in pieces torn apart by a machine gun. This is very frustrating, but the idea is great, so you have to give Epic some credit for that. The checkpoint system is satisfactory in this game and they are frequent enough. The final point I want to make about this is my opinion and I am going to try to be respectful, like I failed to do in my Wii review. The multiplayer in gears 1 is terrible. It is extremely repetetive and always just ends up as a shotgun duel. It's the only gun people ever use in multiplayer and it's really annoying. Also, you don't respawn until the next round in pretty much every mode, so if you get a really cheap death (like a quick and last minute shotgun to your stomach) you have to spend the next 5 minutes doing nothing. It's nice that this edition comes with the map packs though, that certainly allows you to save a couple of bucks. Overall, this is a great game. It's a fantastic game to purchase if you do not have Xbox LIVE. I enjoy gears 1 as a single player package only, but it is a fantastic game.
Gears of War completion2010-06-054 / 5
I bought Gears of War (GOW) for the xbox because I already had played it on the pc and had bought GOW2 for the xbox. It seems to play better on the xbox and is more fun than the pc. Definitely worth the money and very enjoyable. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I wish there was a way to have all the content on the xbox. On the pc, you fight the brumak toward the end, and on the xbox there is no way such as DLC to do this. The brumak fight is a fun part of the game and makes for the final star.

Gears of War took pretty & stylish graphics and improved a game mechanic one title in the past attempted (Kill.Switch for XBox 1 and PS2); cover.

It does not revolutionize video gaming in general, but it makes for a fun gaming experience.

If you and a friend are looking for a co-op game, this is it. The online experience is OK, but, don't expect a friendly landscape. If you enjoy this game, then consider Gears of War 2. Which has an excellent online mode called "Horde". Here, you and 4 other friends can face wave after wave of enemy forces.

The main campaign plays like a big budget Hollywood movie. So, there are some thrills and excitement. The story is weak, but the drama (as laughable as it is) is there.

A recommended buy for Gears of War 1. And, if you honestly like it, you won't regret moving onto the sequel - it is an improvement on functional game mechanics, but not an evolution.

Lot of hype!!2010-03-253 / 5
I came into the Xbox gaming a little later in its product cycle. I was always a PC gamer and play shooters on a controller with analog sticks seemed just weird to me. It took me a lot of getting used to as well. As of writing this review, I had completed the single player campaign on Hardcore difficulty (really no interest in getting into Insane mode) and a few multiplayer games. Most of my complaints about this game are about its shoddy single player campaign. Sure the graphics are brilliant for its time but there is only so much detail you can put in grays and blacks. The game is extremely linear. Each level progresses by going from point A to B. You find a bunch of walls/crates/doors to get to "cover" and kill a bunch of enemies, checkpoint, repeat. The moment you see objects that resemble anything like a place to cover, you are to expect some enemies ready to kill. It gets tiresome at times. Sure, there is a plot but its kind of an afterthought. I am probably in the minority when I say that the Single player campaign matters to the game. Most people would probably argue that you could get a lot of mileage from the multiplayer aspect of the game. There are still quite a few people playing this game. But some people like me want to experience the single player campaign and enjoy a little bit of story telling before we jump into the whole multiplayer thing.

Apart from a few rants about the single player campaign, I think it is a solid game. The controls work great and after a few niggles in the beginning, I got used to the controller very quick. This is the first game I bought when I got my Xbox. Don't buy it new, buy it used (you can get it for about $7 or less if you know where to look). Don't buy into the hype.. you will be disappointed. I would say it is worth playing once and getting all the achievements before people stop playing it online.

Note: The stuff on the 2nd disc in the 2-disc edition can be downloaded for free from your xbox. So don't fret if you can't find the 2 disc for a cheap price. Just buy the 1 disc version and download the free maps.
